The Doordarshan News, usually referred to by its abbreviation as the "DD News", is a state-owned TV news channel telecasting from Doordarshan Kendra Delhi. The Prasar Bharati Board approved the proposal to start a 24-hours news channel in place of DD Metro. This was subsequently approved by the Union Cabinet in its meeting held on October 3, 2003. Consequent to these decisions, DD-News channel was launched on November 3, 2003 by converting DD-Metro into a 24-hours news channel. Its terrestrial reach is 21.6% by area and 44.9% by population of the country.
DD News quickly gained popularity among the viewers, exceeding its commercial revenue target of Rs. 2 crores, for 2003-04, and the channel earned Rs. 10 crores. The popularity of the channel amongst advertisers continues unabated and the revenue figures for the current year (04-05) have already crossed Rs. 10 crores. The main reason for this is that DD News is a free channel unlike the private and better channels that are pay-channels.
The foremost benefit that has accrued to Doordarshan as a result of the launch of the DD News channel is the reactivation of a large volume of quality in-house production. This was achieved through a higher utilization of the in-house infrastructure than hitherto achieved.
News is the communication of selected information on current events which is presented by print, broadcast, Internet, or word of mouth to a third-party or mass audience.
One theory claims that the English word "news" developed in the 14th century as a special use of the plural form of "new". In Middle English, the equivalent word was newes, like the French nouvelles and the German neues. Similar developments are found in the Slavic languages – the Czech and Slovak noviny (from nový, "new"), the cognate Polish nowiny and Russian novosti – and in the Celtic languages: the Welsh newyddion (from newydd) and the Cornish nowodhow (from nowydh).
Before the invention of newspapers in the early 17th century, official government bulletins and edicts were circulated at times in some centralized empires.
The first documented use of an organized courier service for the diffusion of written documents is in Egypt, where Pharaohs used couriers for the diffusion of their decrees in the territory of the State (2400 BC). This practice almost certainly has roots in the much older practice of oral messaging and may have been built on a pre-existing infrastructure.
Shah Faesal (Born 17th May 1983) is an Indian civil servant from the State of Jammu and Kashmir. He was born in a remote village Sogam of Lolab Valley in Kupwara district of North Kashmir. In 2009 he became the first Kashmiri to top the Indian Civil Services Examination and the first candidate from Kashmir in several years to be selected to the Indian Administrative Service through open merit. Besides known for the scenic beauty, Lolab Valley is famous for having been the birthplace of the great Islamic theologian and scholar, Maulana Anwar Shah Kashmiri.
A trained physician, Shah Faesal had to take his pre-medical examinations in 2002 only days after his father was killed by "unidentified militants". His success story is often referred to as a fairy tale and is considered larger than life because it was like achieving the impossible for him.
With his wish to serve in Kashmir,he was alloted to Jammu and Kashmir Cadre and is presently serving in Badgam District of Kashmir Valley.
He is often credited with having started a new trend of Kashmiri youth vying for space in the local and the National bureaucracy. After his selection in 2010, many candidates from the State have made it to Indian Administrative Service and the Indian Foreign Service and the trend is picking up. His image as a Youth Icon in Kashmir has further grown in last two years with his unabated presence in the public space of Kashmir and his attempts to guide and engage with Kashmiri youth. He has earlier written middles for some Kashmir-based English dailies but his command over the philosophy of Dr. Sir Mohammad Iqbal has particularly fetched him intellectual recognition across the Country and many of his inspirational speeches are available on YouTube.
